AI utilities
These helpers wrap =GPT() with a fixed instruction so you do not have to write the prompt yourself. They use the default OpenAI model and therefore need an OpenAI key once you are licensed, and they count against the OpenAI free trial.
=EXTRACT_INFO(text, what_to_extract, [format])
Pulls one piece of information out of a block of text and returns it without surrounding quotes.
- text: the source text, usually a cell that holds a scrape or an AI answer.
- what_to_extract: a short description of the field, for example
"email address","founder name","price per month". - format (optional): the shape you want back, for example
"number"(just the digits, so you can sum it),"date","hyperlink","yes/no","comma-separated list". Default"string".
=EXTRACT_INFO("Call us at 555-0199 or email [email protected]", "email address")=EXTRACT_INFO(C2, "year founded", "number")=EXTRACT_INFO(SCRAPE(A2), "all email addresses", "comma-separated list")=EXTRACT_INFO(PPLX("Headquarters of " & A2), "city")=EXTRACT_INFO(B2, "pitch deck link", "hyperlink")=SUMMARIZE_BULLETS(text)
Summarizes a text into bullet points. =SUMMARIZE_BULLET(text) does the same thing and exists for older sheets.
=SUMMARIZE_BULLETS(SCRAPE(A2))=SUMMARIZE_BULLETS(C2)The bullets are returned in one cell separated by line breaks. Turn on Format → Wrapping → Wrap to read them.
=LIST_STUFF(noun, [number])
Generates a list of items and spills them down the column.
- noun: what to list, for example
"European capital cities"or"blog post ideas about remote work". - number (optional): how many. Default 10.
=LIST_STUFF("actors", 5)=LIST_STUFF("objections a buyer might raise about " & A2, 8)Clear the cells below the formula first, or Sheets shows #REF!.
Caching
Unlike =GPT(), these three helpers are not cached. Every recalculation calls OpenAI again. For large sheets, paste the results as values once you are happy with them. If you need caching, write the equivalent =GPT() call yourself: =GPT("Text: " & C2, "Extract the year founded from the following text in the format of number").
Errors
The same messages as the OpenAI functions.
